I was born in Bristol, England on 4th December 1963 and grew up in my grandparent’s home on the north side of town where I attended high school until the age of 16. My first job was an apprentice engineer at Rolls Royce aero engines but upon graduation I entered the I.T department, something I had neither planned nor desired. It’s strange how things work out. I met my wife Chemin in 1985 and we were married two years later. In 1989 I joined GE as a systems programmer and continued to work in I.T until July 2006.My daughter Nadia was born in 1998, and the family home remains in Bristol.
Working for GE afforded me opportunities to visit the United States on business as well as on vacation. We have visited California, Florida, New England, Albany, New York, Boston and Seattle to mention but a few locations as well as the east and west coasts of Canada.
I have always had a passion for 70’s & 80’s prog rock music and American AOR. During the late 80’s and early 90’s I played in various semi-pro bar bands as guitarist and vocalist whilst the day job paid the bills. Regrettably I don’t get much time to play my ‘72 re-issue Fender Stratocaster these days.
I began writing in 2001 and this is all down to Chemin really. We were on vacation in the South of France. One evening we were discussing plans for the future and I jokingly said that I ought to write a novel. From then on her persistence started me thinking about a plot and the foundations for Ascension were laid. I started to put pen to P.C when we arrived home and the first draught of the book was completed in September 2002. By the end of 2003 Alumni was completed. After a long period of revisiting, revising & rewriting, Ascension was finally released in June 2007 and Alumni in April 2008.
Originally entitled ‘Afterimage’, Alumni’s central theme of euthanasia is a thought provoking and emotive subject. To what extremes will individuals go to pursue a cause or an ideology? That’s where Alumni will take you the reader, and you will find as future books are released that emotive subject matter will be the backbone to the stories.
The inspiration behind Ascension comes from various sources. New England was the ideal setting from memories of my visits there. The basis of the story lies in the inescapable fact that we are all the product of the environment of our childhood - good or bad. Many are victims of injustices or they carry scars from their forming years, and some people just can’t let secrets lie. Couple this with memories and impressions from childhood & teen years that needed exorcising in the form of a novel and you have what I hope is a book of substance as well as a suspense thriller with an original take.
Both Ascension and Alumni were evolving novels right from the start. In both cases, the original concepts transformed as each chapter was written and I can honestly say that the final version of each are far cries from their first synopses. As the plots and characters developed I found the beauty lay in spontaneity and the sudden realisation of a new idea. I think the third book Anathema, which I am currently writing, has a more structured and defined plot, which is a strange deviation from my normal approach. Perhaps I’ve got it right at last.
I have met many readers at book signing events in the UK and my sincere thanks go out to you all for your support for me as an author and your kind feedback. It has been very encouraging to hear your comments on how much you’ve enjoyed Ascension. Keep them coming. I hope to meet many more of you at future book signing events, and that one day soon to be able to do some events in the U.S.
Enjoy the books…
David
